Update on the Canadian Anglican world

I’ve been spending time over at the AEC blog recently, and it seems like a good time to give a brief summary of the goings-on here as well.

On the West and East coast Bishops have been behaving badly. Over on the West, the Bishop decided to change locks as an alternative way to resolve a dispute. The courts soon put paid to that behaviour. Now that any modicum of trust has been lost, we await to see the what will happen next.

Out in the East it appears that a small faction (albeit a faction with high social standing) within a parish have bent the ear of the Bishop to get the priest removed. As an perhaps unintended consequence of the move, it appears that much of the parish has woken up to the predicament of the Anglican Church of Canada, as can be seen in the comments here.

During this time the House of Bishops met, and failed to address concerns raised regarding the drift of the church away from anything resembling orthodoxy. Rather the path of litigation and the claiming of the turf was confirmed.

Well, truly this does not make for positive reading. However it is the current state of the Anglican Church, and an indication as to why there is so much upheaval at present. The short story – two gospels, one church.

Something very different up next….you’ll be glad to hear!

Perfect prairie storm

Would anybody object if I mentioned the weather again? It’s just that over this weekend we are due something of the perfect prairie storm, and parts of the western prairies could see up to 100cm of snow. It might end up as something for the record books by Monday morning. If you’re interested, there is a thread here I’m following:
http://www.canadianweather.org/forums/showthread.php?tid=6&page=3

Right now it is snowing in Calgary and will be for the next three days. Temperatures are supposed to drop below -10c tonight. That is to say 15-20c below average, certainly nothing like normal for Mid-April!

Cams here if you want to watch:

UPDATE: The storm is a one-two punch. Here’s the result of the first part:

Chrysalis

It came to me the other day that the time to which we are headed could be envisaged much as a chrysalis. Right now the church in the Western world is doing a pretty good impression of a browsing caterpillar – fat, slow, lazy and not particularly attractive for the most part.

But if there’s one thing we should learn from the Bible, it is that God does not give up on us. Even in the midst of judgment he is saving His people, even if they don’t much like the prospect of the methods of salvation.

Hence, now, the chrysalis. Encased by the hard realities and persecutions that will befall us, God will do a remarkable work of transformation. All the current structures and our methods of doing church, all the boundaries that we have drawn between fellow Christians, all the ways we have drawn and defined ourselves, will be broken and remoulded at the most fundamental level.

Note too, that there is no fresh injection of material, nobody else to step forward and be Church – it will be us. That’s something else to learn from the Bible – that God does not provide superheroes, but uses ordinary people for extraordinary things.

The end result, what will emerge from the chrysalis, will be a Church transformed, beautiful in the eyes of God.

Canada

Yes, we’ve been here long enough, filled out the mountains of paperwork, sat the tests, filled out yet more paperwork – and at last on Friday 11th we attended our citizen ceremony. We are now officially Canucks Canadians. 🙂

April snowstorm

Well, this morning we’re getting a totally unforecast snowstorm, and the snow is coming down faster than I have ever seen in Calgary. Currently we have 4-6″ on the ground. This should give you some idea:

Env Canada say:

City of Calgary
8:13 AM MDT Thursday 10 April 2008
Snowfall warning for
City of Calgary issued

10 to 15 cm of snow this morning.

An intense and very localized snow storm has positioned itself over Calgary. Amounts of 10 to 15 cm can be expected before the snow tapers off later this morning. Areas just to the east and north of Calgary may also receive amounts of 5 to 10 cm.

They’re not kidding. 😉

Some prophetic insight to the times

At our church we run a prophetic listening group that meets once a month to hear from the Lord and pray through visions / dream etc that people from our church may have had. I’d like to give you a sense of what we heard earlier this week, and then on from that my understanding of where we are headed in the near future.

One very strong thread that has been running through our personal lives recently has been the need to become unencumbered of the things of the world. As we live enmeshed in the world, it can prove hard to do, nonetheless there are possibilities. For example, getting out from the crushing hand of debt by not overextending ourselves for the latest new ‘thing’, by consciously divesting ourselves of all the ‘stuff’ that clutters our lives by giving to those who genuinely need it, and…well I could go on, the point being that there is a need to unentangle ourselves from the world.

Why? Well, one of the other threads has been the imagery, given in various dream, of travelling, perhaps even as refugees. The understanding here being that we need to be unencumbered and not weighed down, listening to the Lord, so that when He directs us that we immediately go to do His will.

The third thread we have seen is one of trust in our Lord. That the tumult of the world, distracting as though it may be, is no more than transitory fog compared to Christ. That He is very much in control, like a strong current underlying mirror clear water, He is our peace, and our direction. He knows the end from the beginning – we are not to fear but to trust in Him every step of the way.

I’d like to place these threads within my own understanding of the current times, and what is to shortly occur. I think there are soon to be changes in the world that will radically change how we all live. What they might be, and when, I could speculate, but it would be only that – and that is not what is important. If you’ve been listening to anything on this site over the last 18 months, the message has been to prepare. Not prepare out of fear, but to prepare in trust. Neither necessarily a physical preparation, though that plays a part, but fundamentally a spiritual preparation.

Why this spiritual preparation? Because, if our eyes are on the things of the world, and not on Christ, we will be caught up into the same spirit of fear and panic that will infect millions. In either case we will not be taken out of the tumult, and will indeed suffer loss ourselves, but we will have the anchor point in the midst of the storm, the Solid Rock on which our lives are founded. Then, and only then, rising above rack and ruin, we will have an opportunity to bring in a massive harvest home. For all those who have seen their anchors swept away, we may have that opportunity to show them Truth, where before folly held sway.

But it is my impression (and I would welcome yours) that this will be but a window. As a result of the tumult, strong autocratic systems will be put in place and we will see freedom traded for security. Then, when the control is established, so will come persecution. This is why we will need to raise (and be) disciples, not merely converts. For sure, deep faith will be needed to stand firm then. So, we will have our work cut out for us during the window of grace – hence the preperation now. There will come a time when we will need to ask whether we are willing to literally put our lives on the line for the sake of Jesus Christ.

So, this is what we are hearing at the moment, and my understanding of the times. I hope it helps and blesses you.

Canada’s downward spiral

Can’t leave my adopted homeland out of it, now can I? There’s no shortage of things I could post, but something that caught my eye today is from Calgary, where freedom of expression is allowed just so long as the correct thoughts are expressed.

CALGARY, AB, March 31, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The University of Calgary has threatened to censor one of its own student groups, Campus Pro-Life (CPL), from publicly displaying the Genocide Awareness Project (GAP), an educational exhibit that graphically compares abortion to the Holocaust. CPL members are going to defy the university today and tomorrow as they ignore the new restrictions being placed on their group, and march onto campus to erect the signs.

In a letter to Campus Pro-Life, which was copied to university’s vice-president of external affairs, Roman Cooney, the university’s legal counsel Charlene Anderson wrote, “We have received numerous complaints in the past about the graphic and often disturbing nature of the Genocide Awareness Program’s [sic] signs and placards… we require that the display of all GAP signs and photographs face inward…”

The university has not responded to CPL’s query as to whether other groups have ever been subjected to this form of censorship.

Since 2006, GAP has been displayed at the U of C peacefully with its signs facing outwards on four occasions. However, at the most recent GAP display in October 2007, some individuals attempted to physically block the GAP display and impede dialogue between CPL members and their fellow students.

In correspondence with CPL, the university has thus far condoned this practice of physical intervention to prevent dialogue. The university has thus far refused CPL’s request that opposing groups each be given their own space, in order to prevent the physical intimidation by pro-choice protestors which took place five months ago.

“The university is giving in to mob rule,” stated CPL treasurer Leah Hallman. “Rather than hiding unpopular views, the university should facilitate the expression of all viewpoints and create a safe environment for dialogue,” continued Hallman.

Read it all.

UK’s downward spiral

I thought it best to get this one out of my system in one go. The stories pretty much speak for themselves, and they really are only the tip of the iceberg that has caught my attention over the last few months.

I’m British, but it’s hard to be proud of my country anymore.

A warning that cannot be ignored

The window of grace

The times seem more uncertain, suddenly the strong breeze of prosperity has dropped – the wind more fitful and changeable. Those sailing in blissful ignorance are now stirring and wondering where the breeze that had been promised to blow constantly through their lives has gone? Wondering whether perhaps another breeze, a wind, maybe a storm is on the horizon, blowing strong onto the Cape of False Hope? Suddenly a dim spectre of shipwreck flutters at the corner of their minds. Perhaps the course they have been sailing is not as safe and sure as they had been lead to believe?

Perhaps this is the time for which the Church has been called to be ready – the precious few who did not join the flotilla of lies – ready to bring true Hope to those wrecked on the rocks of false promises and worldly expectations.

But so much of the church is weak – weak, undernourished and sick. The wolves have been rampant, and the people would have it so. They have been fed – not on true Food and Drink, but on thin gruel. Eat, eat, the wolves say, for this is the true gospel. This is what we bring to you! But I perceive only a slow, stultifying death of malnourishment. Apathetic and listful, we eat of this ‘food’, and find ourselves growing thinner and weaker. We know, somewhere in our conscience, that something is wrong, but we cannot put our finger on it. This is the church, yes? We have been told there is good food here. This isn’t quite what we expected, but, perhaps this is all there is? They ladle it into our bowls with much enthusiasm, so it must be good?

Occasionally we catch the tang, as our gruel is enriched with fortifying arsenic. Never too much, mind, lest those slumbering to their own destruction become aware of the true nature of what they are fed. Just a little here, a little there – just below the level of consciousness. Should any weakling articulate their misgivings, no mind, a new distraction will be found, the questions pointed elsewhere, others blamed for the weakened state.

I see it in so many places; in the Anglican tradition where the Way of Christ is reduced to a mere line in the supermarket of beliefs, where the Cross is simply a way of identifying with human suffering and our self-absorption is deified and worshipped. I see it in other traditions, where the gospel of Me, Myself and I, known otherwise as the ‘prosperity’ gospel, rules supreme over hearts and minds, lending a religious veneer to greed and acquisitiveness, and bearing both teacher and disciple down the broad road to destruction.

This is the church, then? Is all hope lost? Do not believe it. I have absolutely no hope for mankind. I have every hope in the One who gave us these words “I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell will not overcome it”. Though satan may rage, and roar, though he may deceive even the elect, he does not get the last say. There are still those who are ransomed and redeemed, there are those who hold firm to the Rock of their salvation, there are those who have true Hope, even amidst the rack and ruin of the world. There are those awake who will reap a harvest, 30 – 60 – 100 fold for Jesus Christ amidst this worldy rack and ruin. Pray that the Lord will waken more and send them into the harvest field, ready for the window of grace soon to open.
