The window of grace

The times seem more uncertain, suddenly the strong breeze of prosperity has dropped – the wind more fitful and changeable. Those sailing in blissful ignorance are now stirring and wondering where the breeze that had been promised to blow constantly through their lives has gone? Wondering whether perhaps another breeze, a wind, maybe a storm is on the horizon, blowing strong onto the Cape of False Hope? Suddenly a dim spectre of shipwreck flutters at the corner of their minds. Perhaps the course they have been sailing is not as safe and sure as they had been lead to believe?

Perhaps this is the time for which the Church has been called to be ready – the precious few who did not join the flotilla of lies – ready to bring true Hope to those wrecked on the rocks of false promises and worldly expectations.

But so much of the church is weak – weak, undernourished and sick. The wolves have been rampant, and the people would have it so. They have been fed – not on true Food and Drink, but on thin gruel. Eat, eat, the wolves say, for this is the true gospel. This is what we bring to you! But I perceive only a slow, stultifying death of malnourishment. Apathetic and listful, we eat of this ‘food’, and find ourselves growing thinner and weaker. We know, somewhere in our conscience, that something is wrong, but we cannot put our finger on it. This is the church, yes? We have been told there is good food here. This isn’t quite what we expected, but, perhaps this is all there is? They ladle it into our bowls with much enthusiasm, so it must be good?

Occasionally we catch the tang, as our gruel is enriched with fortifying arsenic. Never too much, mind, lest those slumbering to their own destruction become aware of the true nature of what they are fed. Just a little here, a little there – just below the level of consciousness. Should any weakling articulate their misgivings, no mind, a new distraction will be found, the questions pointed elsewhere, others blamed for the weakened state.

I see it in so many places; in the Anglican tradition where the Way of Christ is reduced to a mere line in the supermarket of beliefs, where the Cross is simply a way of identifying with human suffering and our self-absorption is deified and worshipped. I see it in other traditions, where the gospel of Me, Myself and I, known otherwise as the ‘prosperity’ gospel, rules supreme over hearts and minds, lending a religious veneer to greed and acquisitiveness, and bearing both teacher and disciple down the broad road to destruction.

This is the church, then? Is all hope lost? Do not believe it. I have absolutely no hope for mankind. I have every hope in the One who gave us these words “I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell will not overcome it”. Though satan may rage, and roar, though he may deceive even the elect, he does not get the last say. There are still those who are ransomed and redeemed, there are those who hold firm to the Rock of their salvation, there are those who have true Hope, even amidst the rack and ruin of the world. There are those awake who will reap a harvest, 30 – 60 – 100 fold for Jesus Christ amidst this worldy rack and ruin. Pray that the Lord will waken more and send them into the harvest field, ready for the window of grace soon to open.

Don’t be afraid

An insightful email I read recently included this thought:

Since the horrific events of September 11th, 2001, our North American society has been deeply influenced by a media-driven culture built around growing apprehension and alarm. Think of the news items with which we are constantly bombarded that concern the latest studies showing threats to our health, home invasions, child abductions, plunging stock markets, soaring oil prices, terrorist plots, casualties in Afghanistan, and murders down the street. Sales of home alarm systems are growing rapidly. Parents are afraid to let their children play outside or walk half a block to school.

To this, I would offer two thoughts. Firstly, there are many of us who see a shaking of things as they currently are, that there are changes coming to our world, and that many are going to find the things they have trusted in are not secure. In the natural, fear and apprehension are the likely response.

But that is not the way for us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8).

That is the simple truth. If we see these things coming, and our eyes are on anything but Christ, we will sink beneath the waves of apprehension. But, if we fix our eyes on Him, we find the one safe place, the Person who will never let us down. For, God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. There is no fear in love. (1 John 4 16-18a)

Remember and live that today.

This week has distractions

Seeing as the hourly rate for blogging is a little less than spectacular, I’m required to work to earn a daily crust. However, some weeks have their compensations. I would certainly say I’m a little distracted and feeling less inclined to sit in front of a computer during my off hours this week…

Phoenix 1

Phoenix 2

With all that nice stuff out there, this is where they are making me sit all day, in an attempt at schadenfreude I believe.

Phoenix 3

You may of course add your commiserations at my predicament in the comments.

The board is set, the pieces are moving…

We come to it at last….

Chess 2

Yes, I’m being enigmatic. This post has been sitting in my drafts for a couple of months. I haven’t quite known whether to post it or not, as an intuition that I cannot put into words doesn’t necessarily make a good post.

The full armour of God

I thought, what with things Anglican here, there and everywhere, now might be a good time to remind ourselves of the larger picture. The excerpt below taken from here.

Ephesians 6:10-13, “Finally my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and have done all to stand.”

This is the indisputable message of God to all who would hear it today. It is not to move to a far off land, it is not to hoard or store, it is to prepare ourselves spiritually for what is about to descent. The message of the hour for God’s remnant is to make sure that their retain the whole armor of God, from truth, to righteousness, to the preparation of the gospel of peace, to faith, salvation and the word of God. All these parts make the whole, all are equally important, and all are necessary to our ability to overcome the darkness, and to stand in the evil day.

We cannot have the breastplate, without the sword or the helmet, or the helmet without having our waist girded, and our feet shod. All work in concert, to make up the true warrior of Christ, one who is not only willing to stand, but able to stand, who has done all in preparation for the battle that is to come.

We must be complete Christians, in complete armor, whole and unwavering in the face of the evil day that is upon us. That the evil days are approaching is no longer a debatable issue, for all one must do is turn on the morning news, or surf a few news sites to see where the world is headed. I speak not of a singular nation, but of a global crisis that will test the faith, endurance, and resilience of every man.

These are the days in which few will stand, and many will fall, wherein one will know in whom they have placed their trust and in whom they have relied.

We prepare not that we may boast of our foresight, we put on the armor not so others might see we are warriors, but simply that we might stand, and having done all to stand.

When all the messages of ease and comfort, of opulence and excess will be proven an illusion by the reality that will set in there will be chaos within what we now know as the church. Uncertain, unprepared, defenseless, many will run to and fro looking for truth, looking for an anchor in the storm, and it will be in these days that some will be called upon to point the way to the Bible, to the cross, to Christ. With wisdom as our guide, may we prepare now for the soon coming days, may our foundation be firmly planted upon the rock that is Christ and His word, that in our obedience and humility we might have peace, and the comfort of knowing that we are safe from harm in His eternal embrace.

Normal service….

….will be resumed shortly, whatever normal service actually is around here. The weekend was a tad busy, and yesterday we sat our Canadian citizenship tests – which seemed to involve standing in a queue for two hours to sit a 5 minute exam!

Please pray

This week has been quiet here as I have been preparing for a couple of important church meetings this weekend that I’ll be speaking at. I would most welcome your prayers for them, for those who will be speaking, for those listening, for the logistical preparations, and for journeying mercies. Thank you!

All the vain things that charm me most

Being an Anglican of somewhat dubious pedigree, I may not be quite as much into the Church calendar as some folks. However, even I have got it into my head that there is this time called ‘Lent’, that it happens before Easter and is characterised by ‘giving up something’. Or, well, is it?

If you don’t mind indulging me for a paragraph or two, I will inflict upon you my observation on this time. Either it will show I have learned something, or that I have a lot to learn. Let the reader decide….

To me, it’s ultimately not about giving things up. That, if you like, is the part of the iceberg that is above the surface. Ultimately it is about Christ – that He may become greater while we become less. If our focus is on what we have given up, then I would contend that we are focusing on the wrong thing. Rather, the only reason for giving things up is so that our focus may be more keenly on Him, perhaps as we realise how much of our focus has been elsewhere – we see that truth through the lens of renunciation.

It is the mark of an addict – and we are all addicted to various things to a greater or lesser degree – that believes oneself capable of picking up or dropping the addiction at ease. Lent provides the testing ground for that theory, which usually finds itself wanting. The trick at that point is not to continue our focus upon the addiction (and then perhaps at the end of the 40 days to congratulate ourselves at our marvellous self-control (or condemnation at our lack of it)), but to shift our focus on Christ alone – to take the gifts we had bestowed on our idols, and bring them to the foot of His cross.

That, to my mind, is the key. For, all other things will fade away. All other things time will destroy, nothing will remain but Christ alone. Lent is in a small way meant to remind us of that fact – that in the fullness of Christ alone is everything we need: the man that has Christ lacks nothing, the one who does not, though he possesses the world, in the end finds nothing but ashes.
