10th April 2007
I saw a tranquil subtropical scene, lush greenery, a house amongst the growth. At the same time I saw as an immediate backdrop an enormous pyroclastic cloud that was about to sweep through this scene, taking all before it.
One moment, the greenery, the buildings, tranquility. The next, destruction – all is swept away.
I was aware of the immediate nature of the event, how everything appears peaceful, the same as normal, and then it all suddenly changes.
I saw the need to prepare – not trusting in our immediate surroundings and the false sense of security that it gives – but to see in the Lord and prepare in Him, to be secure in Him ahead of this time.
Trust not in what can be seen, but in what is unseen!
So profound an observation Peter, especially as we have just returned from Herculaneum. And so right to prepare in Him and in your heart. I sense a time of calm but the storm clouds are gathering.
Blessings on you.

Hey there Pete,
This is such a helpful image. As you know, I was at our clergy conference last week. The sense I had at times was we were saying “Peace, peace” when there is no peace. The person leading the conference was highlighting the growth happening in mainline churches, especially those adhering to a movement in the church called “Progressive Christianity” While I don’t doubt at all what was said about the kind of growth that is happening in these churches, I was very unsettled by the theological and Christological presuppositions on which much of what was said was established.
I am reminded that the Prophets of Baal had quite a following and as well in 2nd Peter we read about how the false teachers are able to garner a real crowd around them too. (2 Peter 2:3)
Within the Anglican Church there is a particular need for us to contemplate this image of the Avalanche. Like our ancestors, we are so often obtuse to the signs the Lord gives to us as we live what we think our faithful lives but are in fact theologies of deception and false hood.
I sense that we are at a time when God is saying “Enough is enough” and there is a judgment of the household of faith that is already well underway.
Thank you for how your blog helps us to remember what indeed is going on at present.
