Every year, approximately 44 million people are murdered.  Their deaths generally go unremarked, unreported and unnoticed. We have become inured to the killing fields.  The deaths are an acceptable collateral to the lives we choose to lead.

There is more that could be said, but it has been better said by others elsewhere. As I observed here, if you can be OK with this, you can be OK with anything.

But, this is the way of the world.  As Ephesians 2:2-9 says:

You were dead in your transgressions and sins in which you once lived following the age of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the disobedient.All of us once lived among them in the desires of our flesh, following the wishes of the flesh and the impulses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like the rest. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ — by grace you have been saved –raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God.

The real question on my heart is –  why do many in the Church not have this matter as one of the top things on our prayer list?  Why do we not hear about the reality of the situation from those who preach to us?  The land is drenched with blood, we sacrifice our unborn like the Canaanites of old, and from the Church we hear….silence.

Have we become so used to the killing fields that we regard the status quo as normal?  Perhaps we’re a little uncomfortable, and personally disapprove – but we dare not mention it in public, lest somebody become upset and offended.

But to be comfortable, and get along – that is NOT our role in this world.  We are to be Salt and Light.  You rub Salt into a wound, you will get a reaction.  You switch a Light on in a darkened room, same story.  But that’s what we’re supposed to be – prophets to the culture, not chaplains.

Let us be clear.  We bathe our land in the blood of 44 million innocents every year.  If we don’t care, who will?
